Our first feral/stray was a lovely orange cat we called Sammy. She was taken to AnimalKind in Hudson (they're a no kill cat shelter) where I assume she was adopted rather quickly as she was somewhat young and very sweet. She appeared on our doorstep in early fall, just in time to be a halloween kitty! The day before we trapped her to take her to the spay/neuter vet who would then give her animalkind, I fed her in the cage to get her used to it, she just blindly walked right in and ate and was fine. While petting her after she eat I saw a drop of blood on the porch. Wow! Just in time we caught her right before she went into heat! I told her I was sorry and put her in the cage and in the garage overnight so no male visitors would get her into trouble!
Our second and third came together. We assume it was a mother and son, but we don't know for sure. The mother was feral, the son seemed more used to people being around since I think he was born near our house. Slim, the mom would eat for us and let us pet her, but not too much. She was scared of too much contact, but still friendly for the most part. Kitty (or Fatty as we also called him) was scared of us at first then slowly warmed up to us over a month or so. Then after a few days of pets, he fell head over paws in love. He wanted to be our cat so so badly! But we are VERY allergic to cats and just couldn't do it. He would try to push his way inside. When we were home and outside he'd be by our side the entire time. Getting underfoot, to the point of tripping us! He would sit with us in the shade. He even played with the toys we eventually bought for him, and loved to be brushed! We were going to keep him as an outdoor cat, but around here it just isn't safe. We have a lot of nasty horrible feral cats, a few large groups of coyotes, and wild and neighbor dogs who will think nothing of killing a cat. It's just not safe. One day I went to feed the two of them and Slim was acting very weird and pissy. She even growled at me when I fed her! Very unlike her. So I got a bad feeling and when she walked away I followed her. Our landlord had left a doghouse in our back yard and we had put a blanket into it for the cats, well she had a kitten with her in there. Just a day or two old if that. Not sure how it's even possible to have only one kitten, but that's all we could find. We're thinking maybe a coyote got the others. Well we called animalkind and they had us come get a trap and a carrier. They said to bait the trap with tuna for Slim and then pick up the kitten and put it into the carrier and the open the trap and the mom will willingly go right into the carrier. Well just as they said, she did just that. I'm still mad at myself for not taking a photo of the kitten in my hand. It was so small and cute! We brought her to a house that animalkind uses to nurse abandoned kittens, Slim was to be used as a wet-nurse as they had two other kittens without a mom. Something I'm sure she loved! She loved taking care of that kitten! A week or so later Kitty disappeared. Then two whole weeks later came back a bit beat up looking with a small gash on his nose! Now this is a cat who if we didn't see him two to three times a day it was odd! Boy did he have a story to tell! He meowed for like 10 minutes straight! The next few days we tried to think about what to do with Kitty. We decided to see if animalkind would take him since it obviously isn't safe for him here. They are always overcrowded, but said they'd take him and find a little cage for him somewhere. We dropped him off at the vet to get neutered first and paid for him to have it done. I cried the rest of the day. Even though we couldn't love him the way he wanted due to our severe allergies I fell so in love anyway! The next day they called me saying he was super depressed and to please reconsider taking him home. I went and got him, but told them they have to adopt him out. He was so happy to see me! We just can't safely keep him. Again he seemed to have gotten beat up in the next couple days, so I said he has to stay there. It's not safe here. I assume this was the local feral population doing this to him. These are some scary mangy looking cats! She took him back and 4 hours later told me he'd been adopted! Oh what great news! She called someone she knew and pleaded with them to come see him, they instantly fell in love. So he has a forever home now and is happy! Thinking of him and seeing photos I took still brings tears to my eyes. I wish I could see him again to make sure he's happy. I know he is, but I still miss him terribly!
Well, after all that, on to what needs to be written. We have seen a stray/feral cat (we've named Boots) who appears to be young, wandering around the yard the last three months. I went out one day and got a few photos. He played to show me he was friendly but wouldn't come close. He would meow back at me if I talked to him though. He's finally getting up the nerve to stay around when we go outside. Then today when I was on the phone I went into the bedroom and there he was on the back deck sleeping under a chair! I talked to him through the screen door and snuck out quietly. He was a bit jerky with any noise or quick movement, but he laid down and kept clawing and stretching his way towards me! He would slowly stretch and roll over and move closer! It was very cute! He finally sniffed my hand quickly then instantly wanted to be pet! He suddenly got so brave! He was still a bit scared and jerked when anything around us made noise or moved, but he REALLY wanted me to pet him! I assume it's a he, I can't quite tell. I'm normally better at this! ha ha! So after a while of bonding a bit, and him actually listening to "no!" when he kept trying to paw or nibble my hand. Not sure if he knows the word, or was more so reacting to my pulling my hand back every time he nibbled. But it wasn't mean, he just lightly nibbled and didn't have his claws out when he batted my hand. So he's getting quite friendly quite quickly! He's looking skinnier so I tried to feed him some tuna, but he sniffed it then just looked at me. Maybe he had just eaten.
Like with the other cats he can't stay here. For now he seems safe, but it's also baby season for the coyotes so they may not be paying much attention to him yet. And I haven't seen a feral cat since last summer. So I'm hoping he's ok for now. But Animalkind had a fire last year. All the cats were saved, but I assume they're only taking emergency cats right now and wouldn't take him. So please if you know anyone who would love him and make sure to fix him! He's free to a good home. He may take a bit to warm up to people, but we'll work on that over the next bit of time. We'll try to get him to come when called so we can trap him easier. Not sure if he'd be good with other cats, dogs or kids though. If you want him, or know someone who will please let me know!!!

Update: ok Boots is a boy! He made himself a little more obvious. He's still on the deck. He own't leave. I don't want to shoo him away since I'm trying to get him to be more at ease with people so he'd go into a home better. He still won't eat, but appears to maybe have worms. I'll see about getting some medicine for him. Once he's more trusting I plan on trapping him and getting him neutered. We really can't afford it right now, so I'll see about getting a low cost vet to help out. Maybe the one in Red Hook who fixed Kitty. Looking at him a bit he scratches his ears, but I don't see any buggies in there. He takes excellent care of himself which lends me to think he's abandoned not feral, since all our feral cats looks like hell! He's constantly cleaning his paws and face and his fur is nice and shiny. With this heat I'd love to get him adopted in a couple days, but the amount of cats in need of homes locally is staggering!
Please help a loving kitty out and give this guy a chance!
OK we're getting him to finally drink a bit of milk. I know it's not good for kitties, but it's the only thing that we can get him to eat/drink. We've gotten him to the point to eating at the back of the carrier, but it's too small and he can keep his back feet out, try shoving him in, and he shoves harder back out. But won't run away after all that?! He is really desperate for loving! So again I'm pleading with everyone, if you want a free cat, he won't take much to get him used to living inside. He's starting to try to sneak in when we open the door. We hope to trap him soon to get him fixed and all his shots up to date, so when you get him he'll be all ready!
